A female hillwalker has died in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary after she fell about 200m (600ft) in the Cairngorms.

The accident happened on Saturday at about 1100 GMT on Coire Cas.

Teresa Michelle Conalty, 40, from County Wicklow in the Republic of Ireland, suffered serious head injuries in the fall.

Mountain rescue teams, police and ambulance crews and ski patrol staff were all involved in taking Ms Conalty off the mountain.

Strathclyde Police and Arrochar Mountain Rescue teams, who were training nearby, and Cairngorm Mountain Ltd Ski Patrol staff used the funicular to take Ms Conalty to a position from where a search and rescue helicopter could take her to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.

Simon Streer, Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team's deputy leader, said: "She was part of a group walking when she slipped.

"It would have been extremely difficult to stop sliding because the snow here at the moment is iron-hard.

"Conditions on Coire Cas were breezy but clear.

"Everything that could be done was done."
