Fall in numbers of drink drivers

Fewer drink drivers were detected by police in the Highlands and Islands over the 2008 festive break compared with the same period last year.

Northern Constabulary said 46 suspected offenders were caught during its 2008/09 campaign against drink-driving and 61 in 2007/08.

Two drug drivers were detected, compared to one in 2007/08.

In the final week of the campaign, police said a man from Wick was five times over the drink-drive limit.
