Power restored to Highland homes

Engineers have restored mains electricity supplies to almost all the 2,000 homes in Kyle of Lochalsh affected by a power cut.

Scottish Hydro Electric said a fault at a sub station was believed to be the cause of the outage.

The problem first affected properties around Kyle and Lochcarron from 1500 GMT on Tuesday.

At one point generators were providing power to about 1,000 householders but that has been reduced to fewer than 50.

Scottish Hydro Electric apologised to those affected, and initially warned that those being supplied by generators could find the supply intermittent.

However, a spokesman said the few homes still being supplied by generators would now have continuous power.

Engineers were working to replace a substantial underground cable and work was not expected to be completed until the weekend.

Temperatures in the Highlands have struggled to rise above freezing, but were higher on the west coast.
