Scallops and mussels are among shellfish harvested in Scotland.
Seven new areas of Scottish coast have been selected for the introduction of measures to protect water quality to help the shellfish industry.
Four new sites will be created and three existing ones extended under the Shellfish Waters Directive.
Five are on Shetland, one in the Highlands and one in Argyll.
The new areas to be given the designations will take the total of such protected waters in Scotland to 112.
Environment Minister Michael Russell said the shellfish industry was worth £5m a year to the Scottish economy.
The new designations cover Loch Ailort in the Highlands, Sandsound Voe, Baltasound Voe, Burki Taing, South Wick Cullivoe and Scarva Voe on Shetland and an extension of the protection for Loch Fyne.
