The Western Isles will host the Royal National Mod in 2011, it has been announced at this year's Gaelic festival in Falkirk.

The islands have previously held the language and culture's annual premier event four times.

The announcement has been welcomed by the islands' MSP Alasdair Allan. He said: "Tribute should be paid to those who put the successful bid together."

Oban and then Caithness will host the Mod next year and in 2010.
