Emergency services were called to an incident involving non-radioactive material removed from the Dounreay nuclear power complex in Caithness.
Workers at Janetstown industrial estate were evacuated after fumes set off an alarm at 1109 BST.
A specialist unit that deals with hazardous chemicals attended, along with crews from Thurso and Inverness. The area has since been declared safe.
The incident was linked to sodium removed from the Dounreay site.
Police said six workers were assessed by paramedics, but did not require medical treatment.

Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service said a fire alarm was activated on Thursday morning.
Local fire crews going to the scene saw smoke coming from a building on the estate and called for support.
The sodium, a legacy of the nuclear power experiments at Dounreay, was being destroyed at Janetstown.
It looks like metal washers rather than a liquid form.
Northern Constabulary said the incident happened at the premises of JGC Engineering.
Police said: "A precautionary evacuation was carried out of the Janetstown industrial estate and an area cordoned off.
"People in the industrial estate and nearby houses are being kept informed by emergency services.
"Emergency services are satisfied that there is no risk to anyone outwith the cordoned area."
