Hope for saving fish plant jobs

Salmon
Lighthouse Caledonia farms, processes and packages fish

More than 100 fish processing jobs on Lewis on the Western Isles can be saved, according to a local MP.

Angus MacNeil has met with management of Lighthouse Caledonia, who announced last week that they intended to close their Stornoway plant.

Bosses said the design of the factory did not lend itself to modern processing techniques.

But Mr MacNeil said the firm would like to build a new plant at Arnish on Lewis if a funding package could be agreed.

The MP said development agency Highlands and Islands Enterprise had a duty to help the company, but added Lighthouse Caledonia must promise long-term employment if they receive public money.
