Body found in search for swimmer

Grampian Police divers have been brought in to resume the search

Police searching for a swimmer feared drowned in a canal have recovered a man's body.

Mark Dickson, 26, from Inverness, disappeared under the water in the Muirtown Basin of the Caledonian Canal, near Inverness, on Thursday.

Police divers carried out an underwater search on Friday, while a shoreline search was also carried out.

The divers recovered the body from the water at about 1945 BST. A post-mortem examination will be carried out.

After Mr Dickson went under the water, his friend waded in to try to help but had to be rescued by two passers-by.

Members of Mr Dickson's family were at the scene as police divers carried out their search using an underwater camera.

Mr Dickson had gone for a swim in the water while enjoying the sun on the banks of the canal with a friend.

Coastguards and the crew of the local inshore lifeboat carried out surface searches without success on Thursday.

An underwater camera was later used but police called off the effort at about 2230 BST.

Police have warned people not to be tempted to cool off in stretches of water during the current spell of hot weather.
