Algal bloom alert on island loch

People have been warned to avoid a loch on the Western Isles following a blue-green algal bloom.

The tiny organisms have affected Loch na Creige Fraoich, North Lochs, Lewis.

The local authority, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, said swallowing the water or the algal scum could cause stomach upsets or more serious health effects.

The algal could also cause skin problems. The comhairle also said animals should be kept away from the scum and water.
