Reaction to airport strike action

Inverness Airport
Flights from Inverness to the islands have been disrupted

Services run by Scottish airline Loganair have been the worst affected by Monday's industrial action by fire and rescue staff.

Strikes have closed nine of the 11 sites run by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited (HIAL).

Further action has been proposed for next month.

Shetland Liberal Democrat MSP Tavish Scott has called on the Scottish Government to help find a solution to the dispute.

LOGANAIR

As a result of industrial action, all HIAL airports - other than Inverness and Dundee - are closed.

Consequently all services to Sumburgh, Kirkwall, Wick, Stornoway, Benbecula, Barra, Tiree, Islay, and Campbeltown have been suspended. Notice of industrial action was communicated to us by Highlands and Islands Airports Limited.

It comes as a significant disappointment but we, as an airline, have done our utmost to minimise the disruption to the travelling public by re-accommodating them on services either the day before or the day after 23 June.

To facilitate this we will be providing some additional services for the benefit of our customers.

This situation is beyond our control and is particularly unfortunate. However, regrettably, it is unavoidable.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused but are hopeful that, with all the actions we have taken, any disruption is minimised.

TAVISH SCOTT MSP

Ministers cannot leave this to HIAL to sort out.

The union leaders have today made it quite clear that they see this as a dispute with the Scottish Government, not with HIAL, so ministers need to step in.

Today's strike is having a crippling impact on the islands, disrupting business and family travel.

People have had to rearrange their travel plans, often at considerable cost. Shetland residents, businesses and tourists must not be left to face another day's strike on the 4 July.

Ministers must act, and act quickly, to find a solution.
