Canteen cast-offs used for fuel

Waste vegetable oil from a college canteen is to be turned into bio-diesel in an effort to reduce harmful carbon emission levels.

Inverness College will use the fuel for vans and tractors used by staff and students at its School of Construction and Forestry in Balloch.

A newly-acquired machine will create up to 50 litres of fuel each day from a mixture of cooking oil and methanol.

It has also been proposed to compost waste food from the canteen.
