The Black Watch soldiers have previously served in Iraq
Defence Secretary Des Browne has welcomed the Black Watch to their new home at Fort George, near Inverness.
The battalion moved back to the historic barracks after eight years, during which they were stationed in Northern Ireland and Germany.
The 550 soldiers are training for deployment to Afghanistan in 2009.
Mr Browne said the prospect of being sent on operations acted as a positive factor in the continuing recruitment and retention of troops.
The Black Watch, 3 SCOTS Royal Regiment of Scotland, have previously served in Iraq.
Mr Browne said: "These soldiers are never happier than when they are doing the job that they were trained for.
"Almost to a man, they said that they joined the army to be deployed to work abroad."
Fort George, on the shores of the Moray Firth, is a major visitor attraction as well as a working barracks.
