Fire badly damages island school

Investigations are to get under way into the cause of the blaze

A fire at a school on the Isle of Harris has caused a significant amount of damage, police have said.

A team of 28 firefighters were called to the Sir Edward Scott School at West Tarbert in 2045 GMT on Saturday.

The building was reported to be well ablaze when police and fire crews arrived, but there were no casualties.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said it was too early to speculate on the cause of the fire but it had caused "considerable damage".

A full investigation will take place once the affected building has been damped down and made safe.

Two classrooms and the staff room were damaged.

The school, which caters for all levels from pre-school to primary, Gaelic medium and secondary, has a roll of 159.

Harris has several other schools but is not yet clear if any pupils will have to be moved while waiting for the damage to be repaired.
