About 350 pupils will be screened for TB
Screening for tuberculosis is to be carried out in Stornoway on the Western Isles after a school pupil was diagnosed as having the infection.

NHS Western Isles confirmed a pupil at the town's Nicolson Institute had been affected.

The health authority and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar said they were acting to minimise the risk of any further cases.

Screening will be done in line with national policy and in conjunction with Health Protection Scotland.

Precautionary measure

About 350 fifth and sixth year pupils will be screened from Monday.

The teenager diagnosed with TB has been treated and has recovered.

NHS Western Isles public health consultant, Julie Yates, said: "We would stress that this is a routine precautionary measure when instances such as this occur in a school aged pupil.

"We would also reassure people that the risks of any transmission remain extremely low."
