Three new national nature reserves have been launched in Cairngorms National Park in an effort to give greater protection to wildlife.

They are to be known as Abernethy, Glenmore Forest and Invereshie and Inshriach.

RSPB Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and the Forestry Commission are backing the reserves.

Mountain hare and birds such as dotterel, snow bunting and ptarmigan live in the area.

Sir John Lister-Kaye, of RSPB Scotland, David Jardine, of the Forestry Commission and John Mackenzie, of SNH, attended the launch.
