Olympic cyclist Craig Maclean is to officially open a £2.4m leisure centre that has been named in his honour.

The world and Commonwealth champion is due to return to his home town, Grantown-on-Spey in the Highlands, for Saturday's ceremony.

The centre has a four-court sports hall, a gym, field sports changing rooms and a fitness suite.

It started as an idea mooted nearly 20 years ago by councillor Basil Dunlop and the late Gordon McCulloch.

Ahead of the event, Mr Maclean said he felt "extremely proud" to be associated with the centre.

He added: "I would like to pay tribute to the people who made this possible, who gave me so much of their time, who never gave up despite setbacks and can now see the results of their dedication to a project that will put Grantown up there with the best of them."

Funding for the project came from the Big Lottery Fund, sportscotland, Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey Enterprise, Strathspey Leisure and Recreation Trust and Highland Council.
