Residents have say on Harris link

The proposed roadway would link Harris and Uist
Islanders will have their say on an ambitious scheme to build a roadway over the five-mile Sound of Harris.

Public meetings about building a massive renewable energy causeway and bridge link across the strait will be held later this month.

Supporters feel that a fixed link between Harris and Uist would allow unimpeded travel without depending upon ferry timetables.

However, some are concerned about the road's location.

Western Isles development chairman Archie Campbell said a road and bridge built across the Sound would boost inter-island trade and support social links.

He added: "The fixed link would be one last step in a major project to make the Western Isles one economic and social unit."
