Fat 'clogging up' isles' drains
Kitchen sink
Cooking oils should not be poured down the kitchen sink
The sewerage system in the Western Isles is being clogged by cooking fats and oils poured down the kitchen sink.

Scottish Water said a survey of drains and waste water pumping stations had shown that islanders had not heeded previous warnings about the habit.

Warm fats, oils and greases cool and solidify in pipe work and can cause sewage to flood.

Scottish Water warned that households and businesses could find themselves liable for the clean-up costs.

Sealable container

Alan Kellock, Scottish Water's trade effluent adviser for the Western Isles, said most customers were unaware that it was an offence to dispose of grease by pouring it down a drain.

He added: "We would encourage people to put any used fats and oils into a sealable container and dispose of it with household rubbish.

"All commercial kitchens should have a grease trap in place and ensure that it is properly maintained.

"Businesses with large amounts of oil or fat can contact us on 0845 601 8855 and we can put them in touch with a specialist collection and disposal agency."
