Interdict blocks picketing of Glasgow polling places

The dispute centres around plans to freeze pay and cut overtime

An interim interdict has been granted to stop striking workers from picketing polling places in Glasgow.

Staff at the city's museums, sports centres and community halls are due to hold a second one-day strike on Thursday as part of a pay dispute.

Glasgow City Council sought the interim interdict to stop picketing at venues used as polling places.

It said it was not seeking to stop the strike, while unions said they did not intend to deny people a chance to vote.

The dispute is over Culture and Sport Glasgow's bid to freeze wages and cut overtime.

Culture and Sport Glasgow is a charity which runs various facilities which used to be run by the city council.

The Unison, Unite, GMB and Bectu unions said they had no other option but to strike after talks to resolve the dispute failed.

Their first strike last Friday led to the closure of several major venues, including Kelvingrove Museum and the Burrell Collection.

The unions have targeted the UK general election polling day for their second strike.

Glasgow City Council was concerned there could be pickets outside some polling stations and that some voters may not have been prepared to cross a picket line.
