Weir's mineral operations in South America performed strongly.

The engineering firm Weir Group has unveiled annual pre-tax profits of £187m, up from £176m last year.

Weir said its South American minerals operations delivered a record operating performance

It also won a number of contracts in the Chinese nuclear new-build and in the Middle East downstream oil and gas markets.

The Glasgow-based company employs 9,000 people worldwide mostly in the mining and oil and gas sectors.

Keith Cochrane, the group's new chief executive, said: "Although the pace and timing of global economic recovery remains uncertain and forward visibility limited, we are now targeting a broadly similar level of profitability to that achieved in 2009."
