A fatal accident inquiry has heard that a lawyer from Ayrshire died after falling down a mine shaft.

Alison Hume, 44, fell about 40ft into the hole close to the Barrwood Gate housing development in Galston in July 2008.

She was found by her daughter but later died after being rescued then airlifted to hospital.

The FAI, opened at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, has been hearing questions about why the rescue operation took so long.

The area around the mine was often used as a shortcut by local people.
