A second man hit by a van while helping a car crash victim has died from his injuries.

The 39-year-old was being treated at the Southern General in Glasgow after coming to the aid of a motorist on the A737 near Linwood eight days ago.

He was struck by a Vauxhall Combo van as he helped a 71-year-old woman who had been involved in an earlier collision.

Another man who tried to assist her, Thomas Rarity, 47, died at the scene.

The incidents occurred after a Volkswagen Polo, driven by the 71-year-old woman, was involved in a crash with a Seat Leon, driven by a 25-year-old woman, on the A737 Linclive Spur, near Linwood.

As a result of the crash, the Polo crossed the central reservation and ended up on the westbound carriageway.

The collision was witnessed by the two men travelling on the eastbound carriageway who stopped and crossed the carriageway to help.

Police said a full report on the incident had been forwarded to the procurator fiscal.
