Train robbery nets £500,000 haul

British Transport Police officer
The passenger alerted police when he discovered his bag had been taken

Jewellery worth about £500,000 has been stolen from a passenger travelling on a train from Glasgow.

The haul of rings, bracelets and pendants, was in luggage which was taken from the 1550 GMT service to London Kings Cross on 5 November.

The owner, a 64-year-old jeweller from Hertfordshire, alerted British Transport police after discovering that his bag was missing.

The theft happened some time before the train stopped at Motherwell.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses.

The bespoke jewellery included gold, platinum and palladium wedding, eternity and engagement rings.

Officers have been reviewing CCTV footage in an effort to identify those involved.

Det Con Raymond Grimley said: "The stolen jewellery is unique and unusual in design and therefore extremely valuable.

"I am appealing for anyone who was on the train and may have seen anyone acting suspiciously to come forward. I would also like to hear from anyone who is offered jewellery in unusual circumstances."
