Two die after car leaves motorway

Two people have died after the car they were travelling in left the carriageway and plunged down an embankment.

The Peugeot 308 left the A74 (M), near Beattock in Dumfries and Galloway, at 1140 GMT. The road is the main motorway link between Scotland and England.

The motorway was closed northbound for several hours while an investigation into the incident was carried out.

Heavy flooding had been reported in the area with numerous roads being closed. Diversions were put in place.
