Child who caught swine flu dies

Swine flu virus
There have been 35 swine flu deaths in Scotland

A child from Lanarkshire has died after contracting swine flu, the Scottish government has confirmed.

Health Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the youngster had an underlying health condition.

She later confirmed an adult from the NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde area, who also had underlying health problems, had died after catching the virus.

The two deaths bring the total number of H1N1-related deaths in Scotland to 36.

Ms Sturgeon said her heart went out to the families of those who had died.

She said the deaths highlighted that H1N1 can cause severe complications, although it was a mild illness for most.

She urged those who were eligible to get the swine flu vaccination.
