Boy charged with woman's murder

A 16-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of a woman in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, last weekend.

Jeannie Smith, 41, died following a disturbance involving about 20 people on Saturday.

Shaun Paul Jenkins appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court charged with murder, assault to severe injury and causing permanent disfigurement and assault.

He made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

He is due to appear again in a week.

Strathclyde Police said two other males, aged 14 and 17, had been reported to the procurator fiscal in connection with incident which began in a park area in Airdrie's Calderglen Court and spilled into nearby Oronsay Road.

Mrs Smith was rushed to Monklands General Hospital, where she died.

Several other people were injured in the incident and police launched a murder inquiry.
