A 71 year-old man has died after being knocked down in Viewpark in North Lanarkshire.

The man was hit by a Ford Fiesta as he crossed Old Edinburgh Road, just west of St Brides Avenue, at 1720 GMT on Thursday.

Police said he suffered serious injuries and died at the scene. The female driver of the vehicle was uninjured but left badly shaken.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident was urged to come forward.

A full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Pc Martin Cochrane of Motherwell Road Policing Department said: "We are continuing inquiries to establish the full circumstances of the crash.

"The area would have been busy with both motorists and pedestrians and I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the crash, indeed anyone who was near to that area of Old Edinburgh Road at the time of the incident, to contact us."
