Swine flu death toll reaches 31

Swine flu virus
A vaccination programme against the virus is now underway in Scotland

Another person has died after contracting swine flu, taking the total number of deaths in Scotland to 31.

The Scottish government said the latest victim was an adult from the the NHS Ayrshire and Arran area.

Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon said the patient had significant underlying health conditions.

The roll out of a vaccination programme aimed at slowing the spread of the H1N1 virus is now underway, with health workers among the first to get the jab.

Ms Sturgeon said: "It is with regret I need to confirm another H1N1 fatality. I send my condolences to the patient's family and loved ones.

"A rise in influenza cases is to be expected as we enter the winter months but fortunately, for most, H1N1 is mild and symptoms shouldn't persist longer than a week.

"However, we must all remain vigilant and I would underline the importance of maintaining hygiene standards and urgently seeking medical advice if you believe you are at greater risk of influenza complications."
