Tesco said the Raploch Street site was the most suitable for a new store

Tesco is to host an exhibition aimed at convincing residents in a South Lanarkshire town of the benefits a proposed new eco-store could bring.

The retail giant announced last year that it wants to build at 25,000 sq ft store in Raploch Street, Larkhall.

Rival retailer Asda has also unveiled proposals for a new supermarket at another site in the town.

Tesco said the two day exhibition would give residents a chance to find out more about its plans.

It said its proposed eco-store would have a range of features aimed at reducing the amount of energy consumed, and could also create about 150 new jobs.

The exhibition will be held on Thursday and Friday at Raploch Bowling Club.

Doug Wilson, corporate affairs manager for Tesco in Scotland, said: "The South Lanarkshire Local Plan identified this key site as the most suitable location for a new supermarket in Larkhall.

"The development is an excellent opportunity for the local community and we are committed to delivering jobs in the area.

"It will also host a range of features to reduce the amount of energy the store would consume - from roof vents to aid natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting to decrease water consumption, and a combined heat and power plant to cut the amount of gas and electricity needed for the store."

Asda has previously said it wants to build a new 31,000 sq ft store off Broomhill Gate which could create up to 350 new jobs in the town.

Some residents and traders have raised concerns about traffic levels and the fact that small businesses might suffer as a result of any new store.
