Rescuers discovered a cluster of part balloons in the water

A rescue bid was launched after reports that a paraglider plunged into the Clyde off the north east coast of Arran.

Several vessels, including a rescue boat from Arran and a Calmac Ferry, rushed to investigate after guests at a hotel in Catacol raised the alarm.

However, when rescuers arrived they discovered a large cluster of party balloons floating in the water.

Clyde Coastguard said it was "vital" that they investigated every call.

A spokesman said they had been alerted by the emergency services at about 1330 on Sunday.

In response, they mobilised a rescue team at Arran and the Tignabruich lifeboat crew. Several yachts and a Calmac Ferry also sped to the area.

The spokesman added: "Twelve guests at the hotel had all seen what they thought was a paraglider fall into the water and were very concerned.

"The Arran coastguard was the first on the scene and discovered the balloons.

"It was a genuine call but the man who contacted us said he felt a bit foolish afterwards."
