A man, believed to be in his 40s, has died and three others have been rescued after a speedboat accident off Mull.

The rigid inflatable is believed to have struck Calve Island, in Tobermory Bay, at about 2330 BST on Monday.

Rescue services were alerted by locals who reported hearing a loud bang and seeing lights flashing offshore.

The coastguard was contacted by one of those on board who said one man was unconscious with serious head injuries. All four were on holiday from England.

Three other men, aged 39, 41 and 49-years-old suffered minor injuries and were treated at Dunaros Hospital on Mull.

A Royal Navy helicopter from Prestwick and a coastguard team were scrambled, and the crew of Tobermory lifeboat picked up the four men.

Rescuers were guided in the dark towards the wreckage by one of the survivors, using a torch.

A doctor pronounced one man dead when he was taken ashore and the three others were taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have launched an investigation into the accident.
