Police are conducting door to door enquiries and checking CCTV

An 82-year-old woman was assaulted and tied up in her home by an intruder in the early hours of the morning.

The pensioner awoke to find a man, who had broken into her home in the Kilmaurs area of Kilmarnock, standing in her bedroom.

He made off with a three figure sum of money and some of her belongings.

Strathclyde Police said the man, who is described as about 30-years-old and 5ft 8in tall, may have been in Kilmaurs town centre at about 0215 BST.

Officers have appealed to any motorists, taxi drivers or pedestrians who were in the area at that time to come forward.

Det Sgt John Deans, of Kilmarnock CID described the attack as "despicable" and said, although she did not require medical attention, she had been left traumatised and badly shaken as a result of her ordeal.

"It is imperative that we find the man responsible and local residents can be assured that we will use every means at our disposal to do so," he said.

"Since the incident, officers have been continuing forensic examinations, conducting door to door enquiries and checking CCTV in a bid to identify the suspect."
