Train derailment probe under way

The wagons, which were carrying aviation fuel, were on fire
Several of the derailed wagons caught fire

An investigation is under way into a freight train derailment in Ayrshire, which brought down power lines and was linked to a bridge collapse.

The train, which was carrying kerosene and diesel, came off the rails to the south of Stewarton on Tuesday morning.

British Transport Police said the Rail Accident Investigation Branch had now been given full access to the site.

It will be several days before the wreckage is cleared as the wagons have to be drained before they are moved.

The train was reported to have come off the rails at about 0615 GMT on Tuesday.

Power lines were brought down in the incident and the nearby A735 was closed.

Six of the 10 wagons derailed and some caught fire, causing flames to shoot 50ft into the air.

The blaze was brought under control several hours later.
