Neighbour Diane Fraser, who lived across the road from Mr Black, told the BBC Scotland news website she was shocked when she heard he had been killed.
She said: "He was a very quiet man, a nice man. I just feel for his family.
"It is terrifying to think it happened on this street. I am not sleeping, I won't let my daughters go outside and I am keeping the door locked."
Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "I have lived here for more than 20 years and this area has really gone downhill. There are break-ins all the time, and vandalism, and there is a problem with drugs.
"I did not know the dead man well. He only moved to the area four or five months ago but he always said 'hello' when I passed him on the street."
