A man who was accused of killing his stepfather and attempting to murder his brother has been cleared of the attack.

At the High Court in Glasgow, Judge Lord Bannatyne ruled that Anil Kumar, 24, was insane at the time.

Kumar fatally stabbed Satpal Ghusar, 52, and attacked 32-year-old Akash Ghusar outside the family home in Bishopbriggs in May.

Lord Bannatyne imposed a compulsion order meaning Kumar will be detained within the State Hospital at Carstairs.

He said: "Having had the opportunity to read a report and having regard to the evidence, I make a finding of fact that Anil Kumar did the acts constituted in the offences on the charges.

"However, I acquit him on the grounds of insanity."

The examination of facts hearing was held on Monday after Kumar had earlier been found insane and unfit to plead.

The court heard that Kumar's family called police on 1 May after he started claiming his stepfather was Dracula.

They also had concerns that he had earlier taken knives from a drawer in the kitchen.

Fatal attack

He was eventually taken to the city's Stobhill and detained there under the Mental Health Act.

Two days later, Kumar was visited by his mother, Soma Nahar.

He was allowed outside with her for fresh air and both went into the BMW she drove.

Kumar took the driver's seat, grabbed the keys and drove off, eventually stopping in Birmingham the next day.

After staying with friends, Mrs Nahar took the train back home after her son's behaviour became more erratic.

Kumar eventually arrived back at the family home on 6 May, where he carried out the fatal attack on his stepfather.

He also stabbed his brother, Satpal Ghusar, through the arm and twice on the body.
