Island crash kills father and son

The crash occurred on the A847 near Bridgend

Three people, including a farmer and his 10-year-old son, have been killed in a road crash on the island of Islay.

Dugald MacTaggart, 38, and his son Jamie died when their vehicle collided with a lorry on the A847 near Bridgend at about 1745 GMT on Tuesday.

Another man, Neil MacFadyen, 47, who worked on Mr MacTaggart's farm and was in the same vehicle, also died.

The 52-year-old male driver of the lorry was treated in hospital for shock before being allowed to go home.

It is understood that Mr MacTaggart was driving his Skoda Felicia pick-up eastbound along the A847 when it was involved in a collision with a westbound Scania Tipper about a mile west of the junction with the B8017.

Two other vehicles, believed to be cars, were also involved in the crash.

Mr MacTaggart, his son, and Mr MacFadyen, died at the scene.

Police, fire and ambulance crews attended and the road was closed for a time.

'Great sadness'

Strathclyde Fire and Rescue confirmed that one of the dead men was a volunteer firefighter.

Paul Connelly, Area Commander for Argyll and Bute with Strathclyde Fire and Rescue, arrived on Islay on Wednesday morning.

"It's with great sadness that I can confirm that one of the dead was a volunteer firefighter," he said.

"The whole community here has been badly shaken by this tragedy.

"I have come to Islay with two colleagues - one of whom is a service clergyman - to offer our support."

Police have appealed for witnesses to the crash to come forward.
