Police describe 'cowardly' gunman

Scene of the shooting on Calton Street
Police have conducted a full search of the area in the city centre

Police investigating a double shooting at a Glasgow pub in which one man was murdered have described the attack as "callous and cowardly."

George Redmond was killed and John McGuire was seriously injured near the Waldorf Bar on Cambridge Street at about 2225 BST on Monday.

The victims, both aged 42 and known to police, were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

Detectives said at least nine shots were fired by the gunman, who ran off.

Police have completed a full search of the area and officers have been scouring CCTV footage from the night.

Strathclyde Police said the men were shot as they were leaving the pub.

Detectives believe it was an automatic pistol that was used to kill Mr Redmond, with the gunman firing from just 15ft away.

They have also revealed that they are trying to trace a third man who the victims had been drinking with before the attack.

I would stress that everything will be done to catch those responsible as quickly as possible."
Det Supt John Riggans

Det Supt John Riggans told a press conference: "On Monday afternoon, George Redmond and John Mcguire had been out drinking in the Crow Road area in the west end of the city.

"With them was a third man who was still with them when they ended up at the Waldorf around 9 o'clock at night. That companion left that pub five to ten minutes before the shooting happened and police are appealing for him to come forward to talk to them."

A post-mortem examination on Mr Redmond, from Cumbernauld, was due to be carried out.

Mr McGuire was said to be in a serious but stable condition in hospital.

Det Supt Riggans said officers were trying to piece together the victims' last movements and appealed to the public for information.

"At this time we have been unable to interview the surviving victim, so do not have a description of the suspect or suspects involved. We are satisfied, however, with the progression of the investigation so far," he said.

"I completely understand the concerns by the local community of this type of crime happening on their doorstep and I would stress that everything will be done to catch those responsible as quickly as possible."

'Still safe'

Extra police patrols have been laid on in the area and members of the public have been encouraged to speak to police if they have any concerns.

The shooting is the second in Glasgow in less than a week.

A 22-year-old man was shot in the Calton area last Wednesday.

Police said they were keen to reassure members of the public that the city centre was still safe.

Supt Tom Doran, from Stewart Street police office, said: "We are doing everything we can to minimise disruption and to make sure that people feel safe on the streets no matter what time of day it is.

"Additional high visibility officers will be patrolling the area for the foreseeable future to reduce the fear of crime locally and we have secured mutual aid from other divisions to assist with this police investigation."
