Large disparity in higher results

East Renfrewshire topped the Higher exam league in Scotland

East Renfrewshire has topped Scotland's exam table for the number of pupils passing three or more higher exams.

A breakdown of this year's Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) results showed that 51% of pupils had A, B or C passes by the end of sixth year.

Neighbouring Glasgow was the lowest in Scotland with just 20%.

Girls in S4 outperformed boys with 78% getting five or more Standard Grades at general level or better, compared with 73% of boys.

The area-by-area breakdown showed that East Dunbartonshire was the second highest area in Scotland, at 46%, for the proportion of pupils who went on to gain three or more Higher grades.

Edinburgh City had 31%, Aberdeen City 32%, Dundee 22%, and the Highlands 33%.
