Harrison jailed for eight months

Harrison admitted to drink-driving and attacking his girlfriend

Former world boxing champion Scott Harrison has been jailed for a total of eight months for drinking and driving and assaulting his girlfriend.

Harrison was sentenced to six months after he admitted driving while four times the legal alcohol limit.

The 31-year-old had earlier received a two-month prison term at Glasgow Sheriff court for attacking Stacy Gardner and a police officer in May.

He pleaded guilty to the attack at his Cambuslang home at a hearing in June.

Harrison was arrested on Friday after a member of the public spotted him driving erratically in the Gorbals area of Glasgow.

He was remanded in custody after police stopped him at about 2100 BST on Laurieston Road. The court was told he had been drinking pints of lager in Sharkeys Bar since 1700 BST.

Being out at this time also meant he was in breach of a night-time curfew, which was a bail condition imposed after a previous incident.

Sentencing him for drink-driving, Sheriff Lindsay Wood, said: "You were totally devoid of responsibility."

'Devoid of responsibility'

Defence lawyer Philip McWilliams said the boxer had gone for a drink after training and made a "misjudged decision" by getting into his car.

He appealed for the sheriff to defer sentencing on the drink-driving charge until Harrison had completed his sentence for assault, explaining his client had "something positive in his life" after making up with his girlfriend who was expecting a baby.

When sentencing Harrison for the assault charge, Sheriff Celia Sanderson said she had no choice other to give Harrison a two month term.

She said: "In the circumstances the only sentence I can impose is a custodial one."

The court was told how the boxer had been drinking heavily after learning that his uncle Jack McGill, 52, had committed suicide in May.

When he returned home a row broke out with Ms Gardner and police were called.

He became aggressive towards them and they had to squirt CS spray in his eyes so he could be restrained.

Mr McWilliams said his client "deeply regrets" what happened that day.

Harrison originally denied five charges against him and was remanded in custody, spending 28 days in Barlinnie jail in Glasgow.

He later admitted two assaults, and not guilty pleas were accepted for the other charges.
