Mother and son killed in M8 crash

A woman and her two-year-old son died and two women were seriously injured in a road crash on the M8 near Harthill, North Lanarkshire.

Police said the driver of a Ford Mondeo apparently lost control of her car in a contraflow system and hit an oncoming vehicle at about 1930 BST on Sunday.

Laura Binns, 30, and her two-year-old son Kieran, from Largs, were passengers in a Vauxhall Corsa.

They were taken to hospital but died a short time later.

The two drivers were also treated in hospital.

The 31-year-old driver of the Corsa was taken to Southern General Hospital where her condition is described as serious.

The 28-year-old driver of the Mondeo is also said to be in a serious condition and is being treated at Wishaw General Hospital.

Officers at at the road policing department at Motherwell are appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened in a contraflow that had been set up on the westbound carriageway for eastbound traffic.
