Drivers mirth over 'burgh bother'

A gaffe by contractors has resulted in the Scottish and English spellings of "burgh" being used at opposite ends of a town in Argyll and Bute.

The sign on the northbound A83 road welcomes drivers to the "Royal Borough of Inveraray".

But the correct Scottish spelling, burgh, appears on a sign at the opposite end of the town.

Transport Scotland said the contractor, Scotland Transerv, would change the sign at its own expense in due course.

A spokesman for Transport Scotland said: "The welcome sign on the A83 trunk road to Inveraray was provided as part of a surfacing works contract.

"Our network operating company, Scotland Transerv, has confirmed the spelling on the sign is inconsistent and we have instructed it to take it down pending the manufacture of a new sign.

"It will be erected at the contractor's expense in due course."
