Det Insp Calum Young, of Strathclyde Police, said it was a vicious attack

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after he was seriously assaulted in the Maryhill area of Glasgow on Sunday afternoon.

Two men attacked the 31-year-old as he made his way along Ruchill Street with his brother at about 1330 BST.

He was repeatedly struck with an iron bar and suffered a serious head injury. His brother escaped and was unhurt.

The suspects made off in a small white van and are described as in their 30s, about 6ft tall with short dark hair.

Det Insp Calum Young, of Strathclyde Police, said: "The assault occurred in broad daylight and must have been witnessed by anyone who was in the Ruchill Street area at that time.

"I would appeal for anyone to come forward who witnessed the assault or saw a white van travelling at high speed at around this time heading towards Maryhill Road or has any information.

"No motive has been established and inquiries are at an early stage."

Det Insp Young said a forensic examination of the scene was ongoing.

Officers are also checking CCTV images and making house-to-house inquiries in the area.
