A 32-year-old Slovakian man has been detained by police investigating the murder of Moira Jones in Glasgow.

Police said the man was taken into custody in Slovakia after a warrant had been issued for his arrest in Scotland on Monday.

An extradition process is now under way although it was unclear how long this would take.

The body of the 40-year-old sales consultant was found in Queen's Park in Glasgow's south side on 29 May.

Police said Ms Jones, who was originally from Staffordshire, had been subjected to a "brutal attack" and had also been sexually assaulted.

On Monday, police were granted a warrant for the arrest of the Slovakian man, although they asked the media not to publish details for fear of hindering the search for him.

'Extradition process'

A statement from the Crown Office said: "On Monday of this week, Strathclyde Police submitted a criminal report to the procurator fiscal at Glasgow and a petition warrant was then granted for his arrest.

"On Tuesday, the Crown Office obtained a European Arrest Warrant (EAW) from the sheriff at Lothian and Borders which was immediately forwarded to the authorities in Slovakia for execution.

"The 32-year-old man was taken into the custody of Slovakian authorities today.

"The Slovakian authorities will now commence an extradition process under the EAW."

The discovery of Ms Jones's body sparked a massive murder inquiry.

Queen's Park was cordoned off to allow a thorough forensic search and re-opened more than two weeks later on 12 June.

Police spoke to more than 1,200 people and took DNA samples from 250 as part of their investigation.

A memorial service for the 40-year-old, which was attended by her parents and boyfriend, was held in Queen's Park on Saturday.
