Moira rape link 'not ruled out'

Police cannot rule out a link to an attack in the area two months earlier

Police investigating the murder of Moira Jones in Glasgow said they could not rule out a link to the rape of a woman in the area in April.

The body of the 40-year-old sales consultant was found in Queen's Park on 29 May. She had been sexually assaulted and beaten to death.

On 3 April, a 43-year-old woman was raped as she walked on Langside Road between 2230 BST and 2300 BST.

No arrests have been made in connection with the assault.

Her attacker, who was described as white, aged 20-29 and of thin build, stole her handbag containing personal effects.

The woman was treated for minor injuries and was badly shaken as a result of the attack.

Ms Jones was last seen on Wednesday 28 May at 2230 BST when she left a friend's house in the Cranstonhill area of the city to drive back to her home on Queen's Drive - a journey that typically takes 15 minutes.

Personal items belonging to Ms Jones and part of her handbag strap were found on a grassy area close to where she parked her car.

This has led officers to believe she had been involved in a scuffle some time after 2245 BST and then taken into the park where she was killed.

Both attacks took place at about the same time in the evening, when the roads were relatively busy with cars and buses.

Police stopped and questioned more than 1,000 motorists and pedestrians in the Queen's Park area on Wednesday in the hope of jogging the memory of anyone who may have seen something.

The park remains closed as officers continue to carry out their search.
