Three people have been taken to hospital after a car smashed into a Glasgow city centre shop window.

A 56-year-old female driver appeared to lose control of a silver Toyota Yaris before crashing into the side of the Littlewoods store on Cambridge Street.

The car then crashed through the front of a Greggs baker's shop before coming to a stop.

Strathclyde Police said three passers-by were being treated in hospital after suffering "superficial" injuries.

A spokesman for the force said its officers were speaking to the female driver of the car, who is not thought to have been injured.

No-one else is thought to have been in the car at the time.

A police spokeswoman said: "A car crashed into a shop window on Cambridge Street at around 9am this morning. It appears it has lost control.

"Three people have been taken to hospital with superficial injuries."

Witnesses said the Toyota crashed into the Littlewoods store before reversing at high speed in a semi-circle into the Greggs bakers next door.

The entire glass panel at the front of the shop had been smashed by the impact of the crash and part of its frame damaged.

One of the windows at the Littlewoods store had also been smashed and displaced light panels dangled from the ceiling.

Crowds gathered on either side of Cambridge Street, which was cordoned off by police.

Kirsteen Lawrie, 31, who works in the bank across the road, said she was standing outside with other staff when the accident happened.

'Very shaken'

She said: "The car hit the Littlewoods window and I saw there was a woman lying underneath.

"The car then seemed to go in a semi-circle and reversed right back into the bakers.

"There were a lot of people around, it was very frightening. Some of the people around me started to run down the road.

"I dialled 999 and I saw some people helping the woman who was under the car."

Andy Smeall, 24, who works at a nearby hotel, added: "I heard this loud noise and when I went out I saw a car reversing back at speed.

"The driver stayed in the car but then some guys got her out and sat her down."

One worker returning to Greggs said: "We're very shaken."

The vehicle was later loaded onto a recovery truck and taken from the scene at 1030 BST.

Police officers removed their cordon and reopened Cambridge Street a short time later.
