Sex offender arrested in Canada

Martin Cusick was traced in Canada and is being detained by police

A registered sex offender who had been missing for more than two years has been arrested in Canada following an appeal by Strathclyde police.

Former police officer Martin Cusick, 52, had been missing from his home in Clarkston since October 2005.

The force had been criticised for only launching an appeal for information on 11 March this year.

Cusick, who jailed in 1996 for abusing three girls, was traced to an address in Canada and detained by police.

It emerged that Cusick had made contact with the police following the appeal.

A spokesperson for Strathclyde Police said the force was grateful for the public response and the procurator fiscal was aware.

The force said they had been carrying out "extensive inquiries" to trace Cusick, who was jailed for five years in 1996 for lewd and libidinous behaviour against three children aged between six and 12.
