A 38-year-old woman has died after being hit by a train at a railway station in the south of Glasgow.

British Transport Police said they believed the woman had gone on to the track at Cardonald Station to retrieve something when the train hit her.

It is understood a member of her family witnessed the incident, which occurred at about 1330 GMT.

A BTP spokeswoman said: "We are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding her death."

She added: "The early indications are that the female may have been attempting to retrieve something from the tracks. "The incident has been deemed non-suspicious." She added that a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.
