Commonwealth funding for students

Commonwealth students will arrive in Glasgow from 2010

A scholarship scheme for students from developing countries has been launched by the University of Glasgow to mark the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme will give 53 students the opportunity to study for a one-year masters course at the university.

Principal Sir Muir Russell said: "Our aim is to offer real and new opportunities to bright students."

The first students are expected to arrive in 2010.

The scholarships will run beyond the Glasgow Games in 2014.

Full support - fees, maintenance and travel costs - will be offered to those students from the 14 least developed countries of the Commonwealth.

These are Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

For the remaining 39 scholars, full fees will be provided.
