In quotes: Glasgow 2014 success
Glasgow has seen off competition from the Nigerian city of Abuja to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

The decision, announced by the Commonwealth Games Federation in Sri Lanka, has been greeted with delight. Here is some of the reaction.

ALEX SALMOND, FIRST MINISTER OF SCOTLAND

We will make these games the greatest sporting event our country has ever seen. They will be our chance to show the whole world the very best of Scotland.

GORDON BROWN, PRIME MINISTER

It's looking like a great sporting decade for our country.

THE QUEEN

I send my warm congratulations to everyone involved in Glasgow's successful bid to hold the 2014 Commonwealth Games - the third time that a Scottish city has been chosen as a venue for the games.

STEVEN PURCELL, LEADER, GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL

We've struck gold for Glasgow but the hard work starts from here. This is not about politicians taking glory, or about the sporting world coming to Glasgow on its own. It's about making sure there is a lasting legacy.

LOUISE MARTIN, COMMONWEALTH GAMES COUNCIL FOR SCOTLAND

I am absolutely ecstatic. I am shattered. I can't believe it. It is fantastic. There has been a lot of teamwork to prepare the bid and it was recognised by the voters.

JACK MCCONNELL, FORMER FIRST MINISTER

I hope young Scots are inspired by the excitement the Games will bring, and the Commonwealth enjoys the best ever games in 2014.

WENDY ALEXANDER, SCOTTISH LABOUR LEADER

This is absolutely great news for all of Scotland and will showcase the best our country has to offer.

DAVID CAMERON, CONSERVATIVE LEADER

When I visited Glasgow to back the bid, it was clear to me that its friendly and vibrant qualities would make it a perfect location for this international festival of sport.

PHILIP RIDDLE, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, VISITSCOTLAND

The capital investment required to host the games, the worldwide media coverage and the projected increase in tourism in the years following the games makes this a milestone in our progress towards growing tourism revenues by 50% by 2015.

GEOFF WIGHTMAN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, SCOTTISH ATHLETICS

Our board and management committee has a straightforward vision and ambition for 2014. It is to have 100% Scottish representation in every athletics discipline in Glasgow. That is a huge aspiration for our sport.

JULIA BRACEWELL, CHAIRWOMAN, SPORTSCOTLAND

It will provide Scottish athletes with the advantage of competing and being supported on home soil. And as importantly, it will give coaches, officials and volunteers the experience of a lifetime.

LESLEY SAWERS, GLASGOW CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The business community must now focus on ensuring Scotland benefits by winning as many as possible of the commercial contracts that will result in all sectors from construction to the service industries.

LIZ MCCOLGAN, COMMONWEALTH GOLD MEDALLIST

I just wish I was a 16-year-old again. There are kids out there now who will be watching the news and this successful bid will give them the motivation to make them want to represent Scotland at the 2014 Games.

GARRY BRUCE, MANAGER, TOLLCROSS LEISURE CENTRE

I'm elated, over the moon. I'm really proud of my staff and everything we have done in the build up. I'm looking forward to the new additions to the facilities.

PETER LAWWELL, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, CELTIC FC

It's fantastic news. Celtic are thrilled to host the opening ceremony. It's a good opportunity to show Glasgow off to the world in terms of how we can put major events on.

MARTIN BAIN, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, RANGERS FC

Hats off to the bid team, they have been successful as a result of their hard work and this news is absolutely massive for Glasgow and Scotland. The passion of the Scottish football fan knows no bounds and that passion will go on to things like the Commonwealth Games.

YVONNE MURRAY, COMMONWEALTH GOLD MEDALLIST

I was inspired to take up athletics watching Allan Wells winning his gold medal at the Olympics in 1980. Children today get that same connection and that's absolutely fantastic. I can just imagine what primary schools around the country were like, kids screaming from the rooftops.

GORDON SMITH, CHIEF EXECUTIVE, SFA

This is one of the most outstanding 'away wins' by any Scottish team ever. We look forward to playing a full and active part in making 2014 a sporting and cultural spectacular.
