A five-year-old girl has spent three days in hospital after being attacked by a dog in North Lanarkshire.

Cheryl Dixon, from Wishaw, had been playing in her garden on Cheviot Crescent when the incident happened at 1430 BST on Sunday.

The youngster was admitted to Wishaw General Hospital with arm and hand injuries and was released on Tuesday.

Strathclyde Police said they believed the dog, which was described as a "terrier", was known to the family.

A spokeswoman said investigations were ongoing.
